Graduate Researcher on Asylum Seekers in the New Straits Times

Renuka Balasubramaniam, graduate researcher at the La Trobe Law School rebutted a common public response to the arrival of asylum seekers in Malaysia in the New Straits Times on 18 May 2015 stating “[t]here are those who argue that human rights and humanitarian assistance are for the developed states”. Yet being a party to the UN Convention on Transnational Organized Crime leaves Malaysia with obligations to its own public to combat trafficking of persons, which should not be disregarded even if moral obligations to asylum seekers are overlooked.
