Wrap up of Refugee Protection in the Asia-Pacific Symposium

On September 1 2015, La Trobe Law School and La Trobe Asia co-hosted a public forum on refugee protection in the Asia-Pacific, featuring lawyers from Indonesia, Malaysia and Sri Lanka. The event’s panel included Mary Anne Kenny, a practising Australian Lawyer and academic at Murdoch University, Renuka Balasubramaniam, a Malysian lawyer and La Trobe Law School HDR Student, Yunita Purnama, an Indonesian lawyer, and Lakshan Dias, who is a Sri Lankan lawyer and the President of the Transparency International Sri Lankan Chapter.

The panellists shared an impressive breadth of knowledge and expertise, outlining the challenges they face in providing advice and services to asylum seekers in their territories. The evening resulted in an insightful conversation, highlighting the need for greater co-operation between all countries, when dealing with refugees humanely:

The event was booked out and almost $2000 was raised which will go directly to the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre.
