Associate Professor Fiona Kelly in The Conversation: “The Retrospective Opening of Victoria’s Sperm Donor Records: Do Contact Vetoes Work?”

Posted on December 9, 2015 by La Trobe

On 9 December 2015, La Trobe Law School Associate Professor Dr Fiona Kelly and Swinburne academic Dr Deborah Dempsey, published an article in The Conversation titled ‘The Retrospective Opening of Victoria’s Sperm Donor Records: Do Contact Vetoes Work?‘ In the article, Fiona and Deborah comment on the Assisted Reproduction Treatment Amendment Bill, which will be debated in parliament this week:

The proposed law eliminates the existing requirement that a donor who donated sperm prior to 1998, when anonymity was still permitted, must give his consent before his identifying information can be released. Any concerns about the privacy rights of donors created by the removal of consent are to be addressed through the use of contact preferences.
