La Trobe Law School, in cooperation with Shanghai University Law School, will offer a Winter School Subject – Introduction to Chinese Law in Shanghai – in November/December 2017. Enrolment will be limited to a maximum of 40 students.
Introduction to Chinese Law (LAW2ICL)
In Winter School in Shanghai, you will be introduced to the basic concepts and structures of Chinese law and their politico-economic and administrative context.
The subject includes:
- a general survey of legal culture and legal development in China
- a general introduction to the legal system/institutions of the PRC
- structures and principles of Chinese constitutional, administrative, civil, and criminal laws
- law-making and sources of law methods of rights protection
- foreign trade and investment
- mechanisms for dispute resolution.
The subject is offered as a La Trobe Law Elective and will be taught through an intensive two-week program, including classes at Shanghai University Law School, field trips and sightseeing in and around the city of Shanghai.
The Subject is open to all La Trobe University students (all campuses), as well as students from other institutions and practitioners (via cross-institutional enrolment).
Fees and Costs
The total cost of the Program is made up of a tour fee, Subject enrolment fees, airfares, and other costs (eg taxes, spending money, insurances and associated medical costs, etc).
Tour fee: The tour fee in 2017 is $2,000 which will cover the following costs: study tour accommodation food airport transfers in Shanghai (for those travelling with the group) entry to tourist sites organised by Shanghai University Law School coach travel to and from tourist sites organised by Shanghai University Law School textbook
Subject enrolment fees: This Subject attracts all applicable enrolment fees, including the General Service Fee and whichever one of the following fees applicable to your enrolment:

- Tuition Fees (ie Undergraduate full-fees,
Postgraduate upfront fees, International
- Single Subject/Non Award fees
Airfares: As a guide, return airfare to Shanghai will cost around $1,400-00.
