The fight against modern slavery

Modern slavery affects millions of people world-wide each year. The issue significantly impacts developing countries, particularly the Asia-Pacific region where exploitation is prevalent in industries such as construction, manufacturing, agriculture, fishing and domestic work.

The Modern Slavery Act 2018

This Act requires Australian businesses with a consolidated revenue of more than $100 million to annually report to the Australian Government describing their risks, due diligence and actions taken to counteract modern slavery.

The Modern Slavery Initiative

This world-first digital platform was developed by special counsel and Lecturer Sunil Rao from La Trobe Law School. It has developed a Modern Slavery Policy, Remedy and Statement Compliance Check that will support businesses to meet their obligations under international law to tackle modern day slavery.

Sunil Rao’s appointment to the Modern Slavery Expert Advisory Group

Last week on May 25 2020, Assistant Minister for Customs, Community Safety and Multicultural Affairs, the Hon Jason Wood MP, announced ten appointments to the Government’s “Modern Slavery Expert Advisory Group”.

Sunil Rao’s appointment to the group and contribution to the work being done to combat modern slavery has been extraordinary. The group encompasses many like Sunil who are experts in field, who in turn, will provide advice to Government to support Australia’s Modern Slavery Act.
